Medical Device Cluster

Following the industrial development guidelines of Thailand, TCELS launched a plan to develop medical device cluster in 2009. In collaboration with the Engineering Faculty of Mahidol University, feasibility study was conducted and a roadmap was designed for the establishment of this medical device cluster.

This roadmap includes the development of medical devices in three areas: medical devices for the market, software-dependent medical devices and medical devices that use advanced technologies.

Major components of the roadmap for Medical Device Cluster project are as follows:A promotion board is to be established which will be responsible for developing a network and promoting cooperation among medical industry representatives and their associations, organizations and businesses.

  • A globally strong and competitive medical devices industry will be developed in Thailand.
  • There are greater opportunities for those medical equipment and devices that are useful for the general public.
  • A promotion board will be established for developing a network and promoting cooperation among medical industry representatives and their associations, organizations and businesses.
  • A unit comprising representatives from agencies will be set-up for data collection and coordination with all the parties. It will also generate proposals for amended or new regulations, support personnel and research developments, certification of medical instruments, promote medical equipment markets in Thailand and abroad, and establish a standards’ laboratory.

As a follow-up to this roadmap, in 2011 a committee for industrial development of medical equipment was established by the Ministry of Industry. This committee will provide policy, strategy and planning for the development of medical equipment and related industries. Currently, a memorandum of cooperation exists between 11 related agencies to advance the strategic development of medical equipment.

Medical Device Cluster is an ongoing project of TCELS.
